Overview

Why we recommend Mystique Holbox

Mystique Holbox is a boutique beach hotel of 38 suites on Isla Holbox, a small car-free island inside the Yum Balam protected area off the Yucatán's north coast. Its style is barefoot luxury: natural textures, whitewashed timber and an ocean-view pool a few steps from the sand.

Part of Marriott's Tribute Portfolio, it suits couples, families and friends who want the island's slower pace — whale sharks in season, birdwatching at Isla Pájaros and nights when the shallows glow with bioluminescence. Meals are not included, which leaves your evenings free to explore the island.

  2. Getting there takes stages — the road to Chiquilá, a 25–30 minute ferry, then a short golf-cart ride. Air taxis from Cancún take about 30–35 minutes.

  3. Views are not fixed by room category; ocean- or pool-facing rooms are requested and may cost more.

  4. A local environmental fee (about MXN 35 per room per night) and a US$100 security deposit are handled at the resort. Bring some cash — the island has few ATMs.
